Poppit Sands, north Pembrokeshire.
Poppit Sands is Pembrokeshire’s northern most beach and lies just a mile or so west of St Dogmaels. It is about a twenty minute drive to the beach from our Bed and Breakfast Inn or you can also catch the Poppit Rocket bus from Newport which takes the coastal road passing through Moylegrove and Ceibwr Bay on route.
The beach is about 3/4 of a mile long and is backed by sand dunes. There are life guards during the summer months and the life saving club organises many events including organised beach sports and competitions. One of the main events is the Poppit Sands Aquathon, an annual event held in June which involves a 1k swim and a 5k run. More information can be found on the Poppit Sands Surf Lifesaving Club website.
Being a north facing beach, Poppit is sheltered and is very popular with families during the summer. Cardigan Island can be seen from the beach here and The River Teifi also flows along the eastern edge of the sands, where you can watch the local fishermen preparing their boats for a days fishing out in Cardigan Bay. Poppit is also the northern most section of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.
Behind the sand dunes you will also find a cafe and Ice Cream vendors, perfect for those cooling refreshments after a lounge on the sands.
Pembrokeshire Coastal Path
From Poppit the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path stretches the entire length of the Pembrokeshire coast line and finishes near Amroth in the south of the County. Short return walks can be enjoyed from Poppit which offer some of the nicest coastal scenery in this part of Pembrokeshire. Longer walks can also bee enjoyed and one of our favorites is the walk to Ceibwr Bay (approx 4hrs), you can catch the Poppit Rocket back to Poppit Sands or on to Newport from Ceibwr. If your feeling very adventurous, you could walk from Poppit Sands to Newport (approx 7-8 hrs) and this walk is probably the finest Coastal Path walk in north Pembrokeshire, please be advised that this walk is quite demanding in sections. More information on this section of the Coastal Path can be found on the Visit Pembrokeshire website.
